Interiors: A Black Woman's Healing...in Progress
Published in Hardcover by Writers & Readers (December, 1995)
Author: Iyanla Vanzant
Average review score:

It was like I was reading my own autobiography.
Reading this book was like looking at mysel in a mirror. I started reading on a Saturday at 5:00 p.m. and I could not for the life of me put it down until I had read half way through. Iyanla has been through alot and she found the light. I do so admire and respect her. Thank You for writing this book. WOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!

Iyanla, How did you know?
This book, no-this work of art is so powerful. I do not want it to end. The honesty in which Ms. Vanzant tells her story is unheard of. Not once did I say to myself, "Yeah right, that could not have happened". I can truly relate to her and her past life. The journal entries are funny, sensitive and real. All they while I read this book, I asked over and over....Iyanla, how did you know?

GOOD THERPY FOR THE SOUL (TWO THUMBS UP!!!!!!}
I WAS VERY MOVED BY THIS BOOK. I COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN. I CRIED AT CERTAIN POINTS ESP. WHEN IT TOUCHED HOME. I COULD RELATE TO SOME OF THE PAIN AND SUFFERING SHE INDURED . IT WAS ALSO VERY INSPERATIONAL FOR ME TO KNOW SHE ENDURED SO MUCH BUT IN THE MEANTIME SHE KEPT SURVIVING. IYANLA VANZANT'S STORY IS PROOF THAT NO MATTER WHERE YOUR PAST EXPERIENCES HAVE TAKEN YOU,YOU CAN TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR LIFE BY PUTTING GOD FIRST AND LET HIM RECREATE YOUR LIFE AND TAKE YOU TO PLACES YOU COULD NEVER DREAM.

Color Drawing: A Marker/Colored-Pencil Approach for Architects, Landscape Architects, Interior and Graphic Designers, and Artists
Published in Paperback by John Wiley & Sons (December, 1997)
Author: Michael E. Doyle
Average review score:

The best book of its kind
Probably no other book has influenced my techniques and choice of media other than this one; a true masterpeice. The examples and their implementation are very useful and easy to do, the book presumes that u have a sizable knowlege in perspective and other techniques of drawing but helps to improve your skills in COLORED presentations taking various examples from drawing shinning objects to full scale projects. The description of materials in the beginning is short though, but is enough for the intermediate user, and the book heavily uses the PRISMACOLOR markers so if u are not used to these and don't intend to use them look for another manual. In short it is a job well done!

The best I have found on architectural drawing.
This is the best book I have found on architectural drawing, it is worth it's price. Too bad markers weren't cheaper, you would think they where made by Autodesk!

EXCELLENT BOOK !!!
I bought this book in 1991 (hardcover...) and I remeber reading practicing and admiring the author's talent in both drawing and explaining everything he knows about markers+pencils. I have many renderings that were inspired by his style. Later I moved into pure watercolor but I also remember searching for those Designer2 Markers and Eagle pencils, in the streets of Buenos Aires (where I studied architecture). If you like drawing and rendering and like strong colors: this is one of the best choices out there. (amazing renderings inside)

Stencilling on a Grand Scale : Using Simple Stencils to Create Visual Magic
Published in Hardcover by Firefly Books (October, 1997)
Author: Sandra Buckingham
Average review score:

The Best For Beginners
I came across this book in my local library and loved it so much I bought a copy for myself. Ms. Buckingham manages to create beautiful trompe l'oeil work with simple techniques that are easy for even the absolute beginner. An added bonus is that her stencils are available online...

Stencilling on a Grand Scale
I love this book! It has been great for teaching me to do all kinds of things I didn't know how to do. I have been stencilling for about eight years now, and my stencils looked pretty good, but her ideas makes my stencilling look GREAT! I have many books on how to paint everything you can name in a home. You name it and I have the book on it, but this is the first book that I thought was worth the money I spent on it. I wish I had bought this book eight years ago. I now have no fear in doing a full wall mural in my living room. This book is a have to have if you are into stencilling, or if you would like to start stencilling for the first time. GET IT!

I've seen them all and this is the BEST
The absolutely definititive book on stenciling today. The author has her finger on the pulse of what artisans are looking for today in the quickly expanding field of decorative art. She leads the reader through uncharted territory for most and explains things in a clear and concise manner that allows the beginner to understand and the expert to grow. Her use of step-by-step pictures helps even the most artistically handicapped feel as though they could conqure this fast-growing and changing craft. Ms. Buckingham uses a combination of pre-cut stencils and directions for making your own. One word of caution, however; the pictures should come with the disclaimer, "Yes, this really is a stencil!"

A tantalizing lesson in Caribbean furniture and history
Michael Connors and Bruce Buck have given me a fun and educational experience in their creative endeavor "Caribbean Elegance". I hope to see more of each individual island's gift to its historical history provided by their craftsman and furniture makers. Especially fascinating were their fabulous Cuban ventures, which makes me feel they only scratched the surface leaving lots to encounter in future. This one is an asset to any coffee table collection!

Elegance and Sensuality
A gorgeous book that's as interesting and informative as it is beautiful. While reading Caribbean Elegance, I found myself transported back in time to an era when sugar was king and great fortunes in the Caribbean facilitated a style both elegant and sensual. This is a fascinating account of a pivotal period in history as reflected through the style of the furniture.

Tasteful Richness of Design!
Caribbean Elegance, how the title is only the tip of what lies between the cover as it is such a wonderful book to always have at hands reach for small mind vacations after a long day of work! The author has done a fantastic job of educating one about the Caribbean islands' history as well as the furniture. It is the only book that lives on my coffee table, and every person that visits is sure to pick it up and become mesmerized by the writing and captivated by the photographs! It is impossible to not fall madly in love with this amazing find of a book! It is so easy to read be it that the author is obviously passionate about his work, as he leaves the reader feeling the island warmth from his detailed writings of Caribbean history. The photographs are so well placed, and beautiful! What a tasteful, well written, and charming book! Well done!! One must be careful though, as you will be sure to want your house filled with Caribbean antiques as I am now doing!

For browsing on a gloomy, rainy evening, this book can't be beat. It is also a superb coffee-table book that your guests will enjoy as much as you do. Highly recommended!

New Orleans: Elegance and Decadence
Published in Hardcover by Chronicle Books (November, 1993)
Authors: Richard Sexton and Randolph Delehanty
Average review score:

Great Book for Decorating Ideas!
I love New Orleans and everything about it! My husband and I go there regularly, so when we bought a new house in December, I wanted to really decorate the interior of some of the rooms "New Orleans Style". When searching on Amazon, I found this book with pictures of some homes in NOLA interiors. I found this book to be very helpful as far as decorating and choosing Nawlins' colors for my house. Not to mention the fact that it gives me a "quick fix" for New Orleans when I can't be there in person!

Lush and Inspiring
One of my all-time favorite books. The stuff of dreams and nightmares too.

This is an utterly luscious picture book. Chock full of photos of real interiors. Real homes of artists and the creative. Homes of people who love peeling wallpaper and cracked plaster; and especially those who love living in the midst of art works, or deeply personal collections.

The homes of people who love the humid haze, moist earth-scented New Orleans.

Southern style at it's best
This book has great interior pictures of some glorious New Orleans homes. Unfortunately when I've been there, I didn't have the opportunity to go inside to see the many interior styles. This book gives me the opportunity to see the beauty inside, that I've only been able to view from outside. Great book for those of us who love and appreciate the city!

Sacred Space: Clearing and Enhancing the Energy of Your Home
Published in Paperback by Ballantine Books (Trd Pap) (December, 1995)
Author: Denise Linn
Average review score:

Changing Your Life Through Scared Space
This book can change the way you feel and think about your home, life, health, and emotions. Scared Space shows you how to organize your life in such a way that can clear you mind, body, and spirit for the better. The author gives lay outs of a way a home should function to create positive energy. Also how to combine your home with your inner self when buying or building . I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to change thier life as well as the energy in thier home.

This is a serious book. The author is not a "flake".
I was skeptical about reading this book but a good friend of mine recommended it. This friend has a photo of my daughter, her god-daughter, in a section of her house with a lot of other similar photos of friends and family, and one day she explained to me why my daughter's photo was in that particular spot in her house. Its placement was very intentional; it had something to do with affecting the "energy" of her home...then she told me about Denise Linn's book. This book is not a joke written by some far-out flake in California. This book is seriously written and researched by a highly educated and skilled woman. It is applicable not only to houses, but to any place of residence or even an office space. You are a part of your environment. The space in which you live affects your mood and psyche, and there are ways to improve your well-being by improving your environment. That is what this book is about. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. It made a lot of intuitive sense, even if I didn't understand the "science" of it all

Sacred space: Clearing and enhancing the energy of your home
This was a wonderful book. It was very informative and easy to understand. I enjoyed the reading immensely and am still space clearing my home. You will love this book. I recommend it highly.

Decorative Paint and Faux Finishes
Published in Paperback by Sunset Pub Co (September, 1999)
Authors: Linda J. Selden, Carol Spier, and Sunset Books
Average review score:

color washing, granitizing, rubbing, cross hatching and more
Many of the techniques profiled are meant to produce *extremely subtle* tone-on-tone results. Elegant indeed. The malachite effect and the faux woodgrain effect are among the bolder choices. And if a technique is labor-intensive, the book says so. Great photography ... Personally speaking, this book is eye-candy more or less, but hopefully YOU will have the guts to try out a faux finish or two, or three. I'm chicken...for now.

Best Aid That I've Found
This gives me what I really need to build up the confidence to try some faux.

I've had this as my guide for some colorwashing, two color sponging, and this really provides reliable, trustworthy guides.

Color matching, supplies, alternative ideas, etc., this book supplies what many of us new to faux will need to convince us to try some of this.

Book is so good our Interior Designer borrowed it!

Faux - Just do it!
This book is a pleasure to behold, with its gorgeous photos and vibrant colors. It covers the gamut of paint finishes, from colorwashing, stippling, rag rolling, and sponging, to wood graining and marbling. There is an informative section on tools you will use, as well as information on the kinds of paints and glazes that are important in this process.

If you have ever wondered if you make your walls look rich with color, here is the book for you! It even has a color wheel, to explain what goes with what. I liked this book - you will too.

Electrical Wiring Residential SC
Published in Paperback by Delmar Learning (30 November, 2001)
Author: Ray C. Mullin
Average review score:

An outstanding resource for an electrical Do-It-Yourselfer
In preparing to upgrade my home's service and install extensive wiring in my newly-built garage, I picked up this book, among others, to help in planning and code compliance. This book was the single most valuable of all my electrical references. It contains a substantial amount of detail about a broad variety of residential wiring scenarios, but is laid out in such a way that it is very easy to read and follow. It makes a logical progression from simple situations to more complex issues such as voltage drop calculations and service-entrance planning, and each section builds on knowledge from previous sections. Each section has classroom-style knowledge review questions to aid you in apprehending the key information from that section. The book also contains a number of useful tables reprinted from the 1996 National Electric Code, and makes a handy reference even after the big project is done. Using this book, it was very easy to write up a detailed, meticulously code-compliant work plan that truly knocked the city inspector's socks off. In my view, this book is an essential purchase for anyone planning to do their own electrical work.

Thorough
This book thoroughly covers all phases of residential wiring. It covers residential blueprints, specifications, planning the job, temporary service, service sizing, box sizing, conductor sizing, complete rough-in, trim out and more. It explains relevant sections of the NEC in detail. Excellent book.

This book covers it all!
This book is well worth its price. I am currently in the process of preparing a set of plans to get my building permit and start a major remodeling project. This book comes with a complete set of architectural plans at 1/4"=1' scale for a residence. The electrical floor plan is very complete and also provides a detailed panel schedule. The book goes through the wiring of each room for the example residence. NEC code issues are discussed as they arise in the planning of the wiring for each room. The text provides the details needed to perform the actual wiring task also. The book also suggests lighting suggestions for kitchen and bathroom and even includes several photos of lighting fixtures. Very impressive!

I liked this book....a lot! I was enchanted with all the characters, loved the mystery, was intrigued with the family connections and loved the relationship between Ellie and Ben.

I hope there are more Merlin's Court mysteries to solve. Cannell is on to something here.

Read this book and then share it with your friends!

A Modern Mystery Classic!
Dorothy Cannell has made a category all for herself with this hilarious, well-plotted, and exquisitely characterized novel. Ellie and Ben are some of the most likable and sympathetic characters I've ever read. I've read all of the Ellie Haskell mysteries now. They just get better and better -- read them all!
